History of WCS
The son of hard-working immigrant parents, Walter
Pesaresi began his working life in a spring factory in Logansport, Indiana during
the mid-1930's. It was the return of the veterans following WWII, however that
provided Walter with the impetus to pursue his dream of starting his own business.
In 1948, aided by investment from six partners,
Walter and his wife Theresa founded Winamac Coil Spring in a small rented garage
in Winamac, Indiana. They began with four employees, a few coil spring machines
and a dream. Over the course of those first difficult years, Walter's partners
gradually withdrew their interest, one by one, leaving Walter sole owner of
Winamac Coil Spring. More determined than ever to see his vision come to life,
Pesaresi's little coil spring company outgrew its tiny garage and moved to a
larger rented space on the town's west side.
By 1957, the company needed yet more space. The
town of Winamac showed little interest in keeping the business in Winamac, however,
a group of businessmen from the neighboring town of Kewanna wanted Walter to
move there. Walt accepted their offer that included a large vacant creamery
building as well as the man and machine power to physically relocate WCS to
Kewanna.
In 1961 Walter's oldest
son, Dan, graduated from college and took over as president of Winamac Coil
Spring. The total sales for Dan's first year were $235,000. In the next few
years, Walter's youngest son, Joe, and son-in-law Gene Huber joined the company.
They worked hard to establish a good, honest relationship with potential customers.
The hard work started to pay off and they had to add on to the original structure.
In 1969 the company reached
a milestone. The total sales for the year exceeded one million dollars. Winamac
Coil Spring now had about 35 employees and was beginning to be recognized as
a highly qualified manufacturer of coiled springs.
In 1981 Walter Pesaresi
passed away, and the company ownership and responsibility was taken over by
his three children, Dan, Barb and Joe. The 1980's saw slow, steady growth. The
number of employees had increased to 65 and sales were up to four million dollars
a year. The 1980's also saw continued training for employees, a continued effort
to secure a solid customer base and much more focus on quality control and on-time
delivery to customers.
When the 1990's arrived,
Winamac Coil Spring now had a very solid base of employees with the skills,
experience and desire to become a world-class company. All employees attended
seminars on total quality management, quality control, safety and modern business
techniques. This time period saw an increase in employees and sales as well
as the construction of a second plant for the manufacture of tine springs.
Walters three children
still solely own Winamac Coil Spring . Dan now serves as Chairman of the Board,
Joe is the company President, Barb is the Corporate Secretary and Barb's husband
Gene Huber is the Chief Financial Officer. There are now 6 members of the 3rd
generation of the Pesaresi family filling various specialized positions in the
business. The yearly sales are currently in excess of twenty million dollars
a year and the company now employs approximately 165 people.
Winamac Coil Spring has
made a total commitment to manufacture the best possible products to be delivered
on time, at a fair and honest price while providing the best service available
and respect for every customer they serve.
